The Book

The book as we know it today is only 1800 years old. Known as the so called Codex it replaced the paper roll during the Roman Age. Originally the book consisted of two wooden covers between which the book was bound. The covers were covered with leather or pergament. Later the wood was replaced by cardboard which was decorated in style with the fashions of the time.

As the printed book became more and more popular and the resultant factory like bookbinding became widespread, the cover of the books became simpler, lighter and cheaper. The decorative cover which attracts possible buyers has remained important till today.
