Historical district of the town
The area round about the Basel Paper mill contains a number of attractions which are within easy walking distance. Along the two industrial canals of the St.Alban -Dych are situated several former mills and timber framed houses. The church of St Alban together with the monastery that belongs to it, appears - with its shade giving trees - like an oasis from another age. Directly next to the museum a part of the old city wall has been preserved (a key to the ramparts is available in the museum). A promenade along the banks of the river Rhine can be concluded with a journey on the ferry across the river. After pushing off from the landing point the ferry glides across to the other side powered only by the strength of the current.

Other museums
In the immediate vicinity of the paper mill are several other museums , for example the museum of Contemporary Art which is only 200 metres from the museum or the Jean Tinguely Museum on the other side of the Rhine. Also recommended is the Caricature and Cartoon museum in the St Alban -vorstadt 28. For anyone interested in Art in the new media the Plug In is a must see.
Restaurants
Of course the St Alban area also offers a number of restaurants to stop off at. The Restaurant and Café Basler Papiermuhle is a popular local restaurant to have lunch in and is also known through out the town for its good cakes. The restaurant Zum Goldenen Sternen welcomes those with more refined taste into its comfortable rooms which date from the Middle Ages.
If you are looking for somewhere unusual to spend a warm summer evening we would recommend the Restaurant Veronica which is situated literally above the Rhine in an old bathing house. Here you will be served a fine cuisine specializing in fresh ingredients which reflect the changing seasons and what is on offer (reservations are recommended).
Hostels and Hotels
If you are looking for somewhere to spend the night, the Youth Hostel is only a few steps away from the museum, here one can also be served with a lunch which is very good value. The recently built Breite Hotel is, like the Paper Mill, a protected environment for handicapped people who are offered a place of work and the opportunity through working together to gain respect and self value.
